2. Little or no grain content. Brown Rice being the best grain for dogs.
3. Vegetables and berries for antioxidants and vitamins.
4. Salmon or other named fish oils. (generic "fish oil" can contain ethoxyquin which is a chemical preservative)
5. No preservatives or A natural preservative such as vitamin E (tocopherals) or Rosemary.
Ingredients a pet food should NOT contain:
1. Grain as the first ingredient, or too much grain throughout the list.
2. Artificial Preservatives (like BHT and BHA)
3. Colors or flavors. (Caramel color, Chicken Flavor, Yellow 1, Blue 2 etc.)
4. Meat by-products. (This item is by far the most controversial ingredient in the pet food industry. Meat by-products are items that humans do not or cannot eat because they are diseased, contaminated, rotten, or otherwise unfit for human consumption)
In the Book entitled "Food Pets Die For" the author has shown that meat by-products can even contain meat from our own pet cats and dogs that have been sent to the redering plants from shelters in the USA after being euthanised.
